What originated as an impromptu local food fight among friends in 1945 grew to become its own cultural event — and the world’s largest giant food fight since 1945. La Tomatina is a festival that is held in the Valencian town of Buñol, in the East of Spain 30 kilometers (19 mi) from the Mediterranean, This crazy event is held on every year on the last Wednesday in August though the partying starts earlier in the week. The tomato fight takes place between 11 am to 1 pm on that day, and upwards of 30,000 tourists take part in this massive food fight. During the Tomatina festival, Spain becomes lively and cheerful than ever. What happens in these two hours is nothing less than a battle where participants throw, rub, and bathe in tomatoes, fight purely for entertainment purposes.. But the two hours of La Tomatina festival isn’t all that you’ll get to experience on your Spain holiday! The Tomatina frenzy begins a week before the main festival. So you’ll have a week-long of excitement to indulge in. Starting early in the morning, people wearing clothes with food and water for a drink, never to be worn again crowd trains heading from Valencia to Bunol. In a fight that lasts for just an hour, A track full off tomato enter into the town (around 150,000 tomatoes meet their fate). The tomatoes used are low- quality, inferior in taste and come cheap from a place called Extremadura.
After an hour food fight the city is ankle-deep in a river of tomato juice,then The fire department will come out thereafter and hose down the city for cleaning the city and the participant tend to head down to the river to clean up and wash off and then join the dance party in town where the sangria and food flow! The village streets look quite clean with the acidity of the tomato acting as a disinfectant. This event goes until sunset when most crowds head back to Valencia.
Rules of La Tomatina :
There actually are a few rules and regulations that need to be adhered to during La Tomatina in order to ensure that the maximum number of people get the maximum enjoyment from the festivals on that day. There is a short list of instructions for the safety of the participants applied by The city council.
It is illegal to bring any kind of bottles or other objects that could cause an accident.
You must not tear t-shirts.
Tomatoes must be crushed before throwing so that they don’t hurt anybody.
You must be careful to avoid the lorries which carry the tomatoes.
As soon as you hear the 2nd banger you must stop throwing tomatoes.
